The TOA series is a member of Takahashi’s line of triplet refractors. In the TOA design, three lens elements are used, with the front and rear constructed from ED glass. The resulting system achieves a high level of apochromatic performance for both visual observation and imaging. Takahashi engineers have a undertaken a complete redesign of the triplet system, completely eliminating spherical aberration while minimizing axial chromatic aberration in the visible light spectrum.
In typical apochromatic designs, the elimination of chromatic aberration is usually at the expense of increasing spherical aberration at various wavelengths. However, with the TOA series, the focal shift across the entire visible spectrum from 436 nm up to 656 nm is less than +/- 0.01 mm. This is less than 1/100 the aberration of a typical apochromatic design.
The Triplet Ortho-Apochromat concept of the TOA refractors makes it possible to combine sharpness and extraordinary contrast. This unique optical formula, based on a highly air-spaced ED triplet, has the advantage of completely eliminating spherical aberration while having the best chromatic correction in the Takahashi telescopes range. TOA excels in both high planetary resolution and deep sky imaging, fully exploiting the capabilities of cameras with the largest sensors.
The NS version of the TOA-130 is equipped with a conventional 69 mm diameter rack-and-pinion focuser and a retractable dew shield. A balancing ring is provided to compensate for the weight of the lens cell. In photography, the mounting of the optional TOA-35 FL field corrector offers a consistent image circle of 40 mm. There is also a focal reducer (TOA-35 RD) with a coefficient of 0.7x.
